Since its founding in 1970, the Bridge for Youth has always been a safe place for gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, and questioning youth. Staff at The Bridge look to celebrate each individual’s gifts and strengths.
Since the early 1980’s , The Bridge has hosted a weekly support group every Tuesday from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. for LGBT teens. Called “So What if I Am?”, the group is the longest, continous running support group for LGBT teens in the area.
Fortunately, a lot has changed since the 1980s. As more young people feel safe authentically expressing their gender and sexual identity, they are doing so at a much younger age.
The Bridge for Youth has recognized that now many parents need information and guidance about how to support their LGBT child. Parents want to know that their child is safe in schools or out in the community. They wonder about the dangers of online relationships. Parents also need support in talking with siblings or extended family who might not be as accepting.
These and other topics will be exploreed at a half day free event hosted by The Bridge for Youth in partnership with the Minneapolis Public Schools and the St. Paul Public Schools on Saturday, November 8 from 9:30 – 1:00 p.m. The event will take place at Jefferson Elementary School located at 1200 West 26th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55406. Free parking is available. A complimentary lunch will be provided.
