Mental Health Issues on the Rise for MN Homeless Youth

Every three years, Wilder Research conducts a single night count of homeless adults and children. 10,264 homeless people were counted on October 25, 2012, a 6% increase from 2009.

Unaccompanied youth surveyed showed:

  • 33% spent at least one night sleeping outside in the 30-day period before the study
  • 60% of homeless youth surveyed had a parent who has been incarcerated
  • 52% reported signficant mental illness
  • 95% of those 17 or under were enrolled in school
